Bible Text: Exodus 20:1-17
Reflection & Application
Exodus 20:2
God reminds the Israelites that He is “the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.” What framework does this provide the Israelites as they receive the Ten Commandments?
Exodus 20:3-11
What is the significance of the first and second commandments given the Israelites had been living in a polytheistic culture (Egypt) and would eventually enter another polytheistic culture (Canaan)?
Exodus 20:12-17
What is the common theme of the last six commandments? What does this suggest regarding the correlation between my relationship with God and my relationship with other people?
Are there ways I violate these commandments without actually committing the deed (cf Matthew 5:22, 28, 40)?
